As the weather gets colder, drier and windier, you should consider switching from your regular soap to a cocoa butter based product. AMBI Cocoa Butter Cleanser Bar is a fabulous choice for women of color.

AMBI Cocoa Butter Cleansing BarIt features a rich, creamy lather that gently cleanses your skin, while its cocoa butter moisturizes, softens and smooths.

AMBI offers a variety of skincare products developed especially for women of color. Their Even & Clear line will balance skin tone and clear your skin, while their fade creams can help fade discolorations in as little as two weeks.

At ambiskincare.com, you can get skincare advice on how to cleanse, hydrate and protect your skin. Here are just some of their skin care tips:

In addition to understanding your skin type, it is important to recognize any unique problems your skin may have. Following are a few skin issues that are especially problematic for women of color.

HYPERPIGMENTATION: Many common factors such as injury, acne, sunlight, skin disease and plucking unwanted hair, can trigger the production of excess melanin, resulting in dark marks on the skin. Melanin is a natural substance that gives color (pigment) to skin.

BLACKHEADS AND BLEMISHES: These are skin bumps and dark spots that are caused by excess oil and clogged a pore - which is prevalent in adult acne. Blackheads and blemishes appear as a result of impurities embedded in pores and an improper cleansing regimen. For women of color, squeezing blackheads causes further disruption to the skin, leading to more blemishes.

SENSITIVE SKIN: Half of African-Americans consider their skin to be sensitive, meaning that their skin reacts very easily to common irritants such as certain combinations of soaps, dyes, oils and fragrances. People with sensitive skin usually experience skin irritation, itchiness, and redness with the use of certain products and treatments.

You can purchase AMBI products at Walgreens, CVS/pharamacy and a variety of other convenient retailers. The AMBI Cocoa Better Cleansing Bar is available at drugstore.com for just $2.19 a bar.

    Hi Kori,

Your blog post is very good, informative and helpful for the people facing problems with the skin. I would like to add few points that I know.

As the outer layer of skin consists of dead skin cells, it should be in a moisturized form in order to protect the deeper layers of skin. If the moisture (water) is separated from the outer layer, skin produces natural oils that help in keeping irritants from the deeper layers of the skin. Regular washing with soap, or exposure to chemicals, can remove these natural oils.

Skin lotions produces temporary relief to the skin by replacing natural oils with artificial ones. Regular use of lotions can actually cause the skin to produce less natural oils.
Now, the deeper layers of skin causes to harsh damaging irritants such as detergents, gardening chemicals, dirt and grease, powders etc. This can be found mostly in dry, irritated, and itchy skin that will be chapped, cracked and damaged.
Instead of attempting to replace these natural oils, it is better to use green and organic skincare & beauty products that forms a web, or bond, with the outer layer of dead skin cells.
