Hot Mama Daily

My first job as a stylist. Well, kinda sorta, but not really

by Pascalle on May 10th, 2007

Mission: Find a hot, trendy dress style for my cousin, Jo, (that she can have made by a seamstress) for a wedding she’s attending.

Countdown to Wedding: Less than 2 weeks. Which means I have to find something for her like, yesterday.

My Reaction: OH MY GOD ARE YOU NUTS!?! HOW AM I SUPPOSED TO WORK UNDER THESE CONDITIONS!?!?”

But that was probably an overreaction on my part. I’m a Capricorn so I tend to be a tad bit dramatic. Meh. My family pays me no mind. They’re used to it.

So on to the mission. We all know metallics are all the rage right now, but I can’t go with a metallic-fabric dress since Jo has a specific color in mind: a burnt (warm) orange.

Hmm…okay so no metallics as the main fabric on the dress, but that doesn’t mean she can’t rock metallic accessories, right? I’m thinking gold accessories would be marvelous with that dress color.

OK. Since we have the dress color and accessories color out of the way, we can now focus on the dress itself. For style/cut, I think I want her to go with an asymmetrical, one-shoulder piece. Yeah, yeah… its sooooo Fall ‘06, but who the heck cares? People are still wearing one-shoulder styles (here’s a recent pic of Selma Blair, rocking a Kate Moss Top Shop dress).

Cute, n’est pas?

And here are some other one-shoulder dresses I found online (by the way the middle dress is by BCBGirls):

All of the above are nice, but I’m torn between the following 2 dresses for my cousin:

Emily Rossum is wearing a draped one-shoulder dress by Derek Lam ($1,740.00 USD - even if you wanted to pay this much for the dress it’s sold out almost everywhere…) Lucy Liu is wearing the “Layla” one-shoulder dress by Rachel Roy ($790.00 USD). Lucy Liu totally has the right idea as she is wearing gold pumps with her ensemble. Love love love it. In either case, to complete the look all Jo would need is a belt, a metallic clutch, and some fierce metallic sandals/pumps to match. I think I’m leaning a bit more towards the dress Rachel Roy dress.

My suggestion:

I’ll let you gals know what she decided to go with.

Which of the dresses above do you prefer?
